The look of many a Albion home is with a high slope rooftop covered in lovely and colourful shingles. While, traditionally, this roofing look has been the most popular, that may no longer be the case. Going for a more modern look may require Albion homeowners to forgo on roofing traditions and what is typically used in order to venture into the newer styles. This means low slope roofing, the opposite of what is typically used in residential homes. While it is the most popular style of roofing in commercial environments thanks to its lower costs and easier maintenance, low slope roofing has gained increasing popularity in residential settings as well. There are many systems for constructing these flat roofs, such as built-up roofs which use tar paper, modified bitumen roofs with superior waterproofing and insulation, single ply roofs which are very energy efficient, among others. While each system has its own pros and cons, the end result is mostly the same: very useful and easy to maintain low slope roofing. A house with a well-planned and properly installed flat roof will have a very unique look that will be the envy of a traditional Albion neighbourhood.
A BETTER STYLE
While some may not consider low slope roofing to be stylish and can name many disadvantages to its use such as the reduction of inner space due to the lack of attics, there is no denying that flat roofs on modern Albion homes are trending. In a neighbourhood filled with high sloped shingle roofing, a home with a low slope roof can be out of tune with rest. However, this should not be important to Albion homeowners who are interested in getting the best possible look out of their own homes. Many modern architectural styles go hand in hand with the looks of a low sloped roof. Minimalism, Bauhaus, cubism, modular architecture, even retro: these are all styles that go fantastic with a proper flat roof. The choice of low slope roofing is not only made because of aesthetics. On the contrary, most flat roofs add an extra layer of practicality to a home, increasing the usable space outdoors, and even allowing for such constructions as terraces (or terrace pools!), as well as future floors on top. The fact that these roofs add more useful space for equipment such as ventilation, air-conditioning or even the installation of solar panels, on top of them being cheaper, easier to install and maintain, make it obvious why flat roofs are so popular nowadays.
